Murphy Cup Regatta
March 31, 2018
– The team kicked off the 2018 Spring racing season with a trip down to Philadelphia for the Murphy Cup Regatta. The Schuylkill River was blustery as ever, with winds picking up throughout the day. Nonetheless, the boys set foot on the St. Joe's Boathouse dock invigorated and excited to take on the day of races.
The Freshman squad had a promising first showing for the standard 2k distance racing that takes place in the Spring. The 1st and 2nd freshman 8+'s both advanced from morning heats to the finals in the same flight, with Michigan A placing 3rd and Michigan B placing 5th, beating out other ACRA competitors in the race. The freshman 4+ also performed well, placing 3rd overall after advancing to finals, behind USMMA and Fordham.
Varsity had a challenging day but was able to demonstrate its depth. The 3rd and 2nd Varsity 8+'s both took 3rd overall in finals, behind Philly-local teams Drexel and St. Joseph's in both cases. This outcome bodes well for both ACRA and the Dad Vails, at the latter of which the boys will be facing the same teams again. The 1st Varsity 8+, a young boat of entirely juniors and sophomores, felt the heat of the pressure cooker that is the 1V category. The boys advanced to the petite final after a choppy race in the heats, and placed 3rd behind Colgate and Lehigh. A crew that has demonstrated high potential for speed in the past, the 1V boys will certainly be going forward into the season with chips on their shoulders.
Qualifying races for varsity oarsmen continued throughout the morning. After placing second to Drexel, the 2V advanced to the final, where they placed fourth with a time of 6:12.55.
At the end of the day, the team packed up the trailer and set off for a long van ride home to chilly Ann Arbor. They depart again in just a few days to Washington D.C. - for the George Washington Invitational!
