Ohio State Dual

11/19/11 - It is an annual tradition for the Michigan Men?s Rowing Team. The Ohio State Dual Race, the battle for the Wolverbuck Oar. The culmination of the fall racing season for both squads.

Held annually on the third Saturday of November, the race traditionally coincided with the football game between the two schools. The new Big Ten schedule moved the football game a week later, but the Wolverbuck race maintained its traditional date.

The race alternates between Columbus and Ann Arbor depending on the location of the football game. This year, the race was held in Ann Arbor, on Argo Pond just a few miles from campus. Despite moderate winds, the morning races saw dry and seasonably mild conditions.

Parents, alumni, friends, and students arrived early to see the Freshman/Novice 8s launch. The freshmen race a time trial along the 1600-meter course. Michigan had a strong performance from top to bottom, placing two crews in front of Ohio State?s top boat. Michigan?s A boat finished an impressive 20 seconds ahead of the field. Overall, it was a great race for the freshmen to end their first season as collegiate rowers.

The next race was the Varsity 4s, another time trial. Michigan fielded seven boats against Ohio State?s lone entry. In a dominant performance, all of Michigan?s 4s finished ahead of Ohio State, with the Michigan A entry finishing in a time of 5:54.3.

The final race of the morning was the Varsity 8. After a long fall season of head races, the top boat from each school raced side-by-side in a 1600-meter sprint race. The start was staggered given the sharp starboard turn 500 meters into the race. Michigan started up and never looked back, cruising to a 30-second victory over Ohio State.

Michigan extended their winning streak in the rivalry to 16 consecutive years, the longest such streak for any Michigan team against Ohio State. The Wolverbuck Oar remains in Ann Arbor, where it will resume its place in the team?s indoor training facility.

The Michigan Men now head indoors to begin another long winter training season. They look to gain speed on the ergometer before hitting the water again in late February for their Spring Break training trip in Gainesville, Georgia.
